Further information
-
Made entirely in the UK, from hides of pasture-fed cattle raised on farms following regenerative principles, certified by Pasture for Life.
-
Our full-grain leather is produced in sides (half hides). Sides range between 18-25 square feet, and include areas of shoulder, belly, and bend. Please refer to the diagram in images shown here.
Across the different areas of the side, the surface evolves in texture, strength and handle, and each area has its own distinct qualities:
The bend is the largest area, from the centre part of the hide, the animal’s back. This a versatile panel with consistent quality of grain and fibre.
The shoulder tends to have greater variation, including natural growth marks of the animal – because the necks of these pasture-fed cattle have done a lot of lifting and lowering as they graze.
The belly is a longer narrow section at the edge of the side, tends to be softer, with a looser fibre that gives more stretch – because the belly of an animal has naturally already stretched.
-
Our full grain leather includes some variation and marks which we celebrate as an inherent part of a natural material. Growth lines, scars and scratches are all evidence of the life of these animals, which have been raised outdoors, in fields and woodlands that are characteristic of the UK landscape.
Our hides are certified by Pasture for Life, which ensures that these animals were raised entirely on their natural diet of pasture. They are native breeds, raised to full maturity – therefore the fibre structure is strong, the grain is robust, and growth lines are evident.
-
With use and wear, British Pasture Leather will develop a patina that increases its unique and inherently natural character. Treatment with leather conditioner will develop the patina and improve the performance of British Pasture Leather by ensuring it does not dry and providing a layer of protection.
As we have avoided applying heavy coatings, this leather is not totally waterproof – we recommend you nourish your leather with a natural care conditioner. Avoiding vigorous rubbing against light coloured textiles will minimise the possibility of colour transfer.
-
Sides range between 18-25 square feet. Every hide is a different size because we work with farms rearing different breeds of cattle, and their sizes vary.
