Our Leather

British Pasture Leather connects leather to land, farming, and natural systems. Our hides are sourced exclusively from pasture-fed cattle raised on British farms that follow regenerative principles, helping to build soil health, enhance biodiversity and sustain rural livelihoods.

Our Approach

British Pasture Leather is made through a fully traceable UK supply chain. The hides are processed through small rural abattoirs, then tanned and finished by specialist partners using time-honoured methods. At every stage - from farm to tannery to finishing - provenance is maintained, connecting each piece of leather back to a known network of farms and a wider national movement centred on regenerative agriculture. This level of traceability allows brands to understand the origins of their material, supporting farming systems that deliver positive environmental outcomes while eliminating the risks associated with opaque global supply chains.

Our Leather

Our vegetable-tanned leather has a natural strength, suppleness and character that is enhanced by our light-touch finishing. We do not use plastic coatings. A durable material that will become more beautiful and unique with use, it is well suited to design that embraces longevity and repairability.

We seek to celebrate the natural character of grain, growth, and other evidence of the animal’s life on pasture and among hedgerows or woodlands.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • British Pasture Leather is leather made from hides sourced from cattle raised on Pasture for Life certified farms. It is fully traceable to farm level and processed in the UK using vegetable tanning methods.

  • Pasture for Life is a UK non-profit membership organisation started in 2009 by farmers, which supports and verifies livestock farming systems based on 100% pasture-fed diets, promoting practices that work with natural ecosystems. They research and share knowledge on how well-managed grazing can support soil health, biodiversity and carbon cycling.

  • A regenerative approach to farming is one that works with natural ecological processes to restore soil health, increase biodiversity and enhance ecosystem function. Managed grazing of ruminant animals on pasture is a driver for ecological improvement. We work with farms that follow pasture-based systems aligned with regenerative principles, certified by Pasture for Life.

  • We produce different styles of leather, with overarching characteristics that are defined by the hides we’re using and our approach to processing. Because it is vegetable-tanned and minimally finished, each hide carries subtle variations that reflect its natural character showing evidence of the animal’s life on pasture. Our leather has a supple handle with visible grain texture.

Our UK Leather Production

We have fulfilled a vision for a local, traceable supply chain entirely thanks to our expert partners who represent some of the last remaining leather makers in the UK.

The production of leather here has all but vanished, a victim of globalisation – but a few historic facilities remain, and we are fortunate to work with them in making British Pasture Leather.

Thomas Ware & Sons

We are committed to producing leather locally, and we champion the traditional methods of vegetable tanning. We work with Thomas Ware tannery in Bristol which uses a blend of natural tannins from mimosa, myrabolam and chestnut.

Blenkinsop Leathers

Our tanned unfinished hides go to Blenkinsop Leathers, a multigenerational finishing facility in Northamptonshire. Here the leather goes through one further wet process in the drums, this is where colour, fats and oils are added. This stage defines the details of our finished leather such as the thickness and temper. We use light touch methods of leather finishing so that the true character of the leather can be seen and celebrated.
