About the Material

What is British Pasture Leather?
British Pasture Leather is leather made from hides sourced from cattle raised on Pasture for Life certified farms. It is fully traceable to farm level and processed in the UK using vegetable tanning methods.

What makes our leather different?

Globally-produced  leather loses its connection to its farm origins . British Pasture Leather, in contrast, retains that link – our approach connects the finished material to the farms, farming practices and landscapes from which it came.

Is this a product of the meat industry?
Yes. Hides are a secondary product of the meat and dairy industries. All cattle are raised for food, the hide makes up about 1-2% of their economic value. Our work ensures they are used well — retaining value within UK farming systems rather than being exported or wasted.

What is Pasture for Life?

Pasture for Life is a UK non-profit membership organisation started in 2009 by farmers,

which supports and verifies livestock farming systems based on 100% pasture-fed diets, promoting practices that work with natural ecosystems. They research and share knowledge on how well-managed grazing can support soil health, biodiversity and carbon cycling.

Traceability & Transparency

Can you trace each hide back to a farm?
Every raw hide that enters our supply is traceable to the animal and farm it came from. While it is not currently possible to maintain that information for each hide through the tanning process, because tags are removed at the tannery, we can identify the group of farms whose hides are in every batch of finished leather (about 10-15 farms for each batch of 50 hides). We are doing ongoing work to develop single-hide traceability through to finished leather using a system of marking each hide.

How do you verify your claims?
We work exclusively with farms certified by Pasture for Life. This certification underpins our sourcing and farming practices. Across our supply chain, we maintain documentation linking hides to partner farms and abattoirs, and we work with established UK tanneries and processors which allows for total transparency in our production. We are also members/partners of the Sustainable Leather Foundation, supporting ongoing work to better understand and communicate the impacts of leather production.

Our approach is to be transparent about what we can evidence today, while continuing to improve how we measure and communicate impact.

Farming & Impact

Is British Pasture Leather “regenerative”?
A regenerative approach to farming is one that works with natural ecological processes to restore soil health, increase biodiversity and enhance ecosystem function. Managed grazing of ruminant animals on pasture is a driver for ecological improvement. We work with farms that follow pasture-based systems aligned with regenerative principles, certified by Pasture for Life.

Why pasture-based farming?
Well-managed grazing systems can support soil health, biodiversity, and carbon cycling. We connect this to the value of our leather material.

How does British Pasture Leather’s approach support farmers?
We aim to provide direct value back to the Pasture for Life certified farms that supply us by creating a market for their hides, and ensuring they are recognised as part of the animal’s value.

Production & Process

How is the leather tanned?
Our leather is vegetable-tanned in the UK using traditional pit and drum tanning methods. These use plant-based tannins rather than chrome or metals, which are more commonly used in global leather production.

Does it contain synthetic finishes or plastics?
We prohibit the use of plastic in our production, and minimise the use of non-plastic coatings, allowing the natural character of the leather to remain visible and age beautifully over time.

Where is the leather made?
All processing — from raw hide to finished leather — takes place in the UK.

Why produce locally?

Around two-thirds of UK hides are exported. Building a domestic, traceable leather supply chain helps retain value locally and supports necessary infrastructure –- such as rural abattoirs –- underpinning sustainable farming systems.

Quality & Use

What does the leather look and feel like?
We produce different styles of leather, with overarching characteristics that are defined by the hides we’re using and our approach to processing. Because it is vegetable-tanned and minimally finished, each hide carries subtle variations that reflect its natural character showing evidence of the animal’s life on pasture. Our leather has a supple handle with visible grain texture.

Is it durable?
Yes, very. Vegetable-tanned leather is known for its strength and longevity, developing a rich patina with use. It is well-suited to products made for repairability, and when maintained with leather conditioners it can last for generations.

What can it be used for?
British Pasture Leather is suitable for bags, footwear, accessories, and upholstery. We offer a range of styles and surface finishes, and we can offer guidance as to its best use across diverse design applications.

How does it compare to ‘vegan leather’?

Materials described as ‘vegan leather’ are often made using synthetic polymers or plastic-based coatings. While these materials avoid animal inputs, they can still rely on fossil fuels and may not biodegrade. British Pasture Leather is a natural material made from hides that are a product of the food system. Rather than positioning one material as universally ‘better’, we believe it is important to understand how materials are made, what they are made from, the systems they support and the impacts they may have.

Working With Us

Does British Pasture Leather cost more than commodity leather?

British Pasture Leather reflects a different set of priorities to conventional leather production. We work with pasture-based farming systems; we source and process within the UK; and therefore we produce at a smaller scale. These factors all contribute to a higher cost than globally traded commodity leather. For our partners, that cost is balanced by the value it brings – the quality of the material and the knowledge it originated on farms with positive impacts.

Can I buy small quantities?
Yes. We offer leather to both independent makers and larger brands, with flexible volumes depending on inventory. Where possible, we can supply our flagship styles with no minimum order quantities. These pieces are typically available as sides, half-shoulders, bellies or bends.

Can I develop custom leather?
Yes. We offer development opportunities for brands looking to create bespoke styles. We can work closely with you to fulfill specific needs, including providing educational opportunities to interact closely with us and our partners

Can I join the next Field Day?

Yes! Please join the mailing list to receive announcements with dates of our upcoming events. If you are an organisation or a business interested in a bespoke day, reach out to us directly.

Do you offer storytelling or traceability support?
Yes. We can provide content, imagery, and data to help communicate the story of the material.
